Stay Calm and Talk Workshop

This powerpoint slides is based on the previous upload.

The previous one was used in today's workshop.

The new version will be used in tomorrow's workshop.

The new slides contain a few addition slides that I thought about to include but forgot to do so.

The previous slide contains 93 slides and the new slide contains 99 slides.

99 and 1 are my favourite numbers > 991

The Q&A session at the end of today's worshop made me decide to go ahead and include them.

Hope you're somehow benefitting from this slideshow.

Don't forget to mention me in your prayers.

Resepi Kegembiraan

Happy Diwali ....

And just beacuse its diwali ... I am sharing my recipes for Barfi, Goolab Jamoon, ladoo and Kurma ... ya'all enjoy right :)O

GOOLAB JAMOON

Ingredients: a half pound of butter, one lb flour, one TS ground cardamom, one can condensed milk, half cup evaporated milk, one cup of vegetable oil for frying, two cups of granulated sugar and four cups of water.

Method: Rub butter into flour and cardamom until crumbly. Add condensed milk and evaporated milk to flour and stir until milk is absorbed. Break off pieces and shape like an almond two inches long and deep fry until golden brown. Boil sugar and water to a thick syrup (until it spins a thread). Pour syrup over Goolab Jamoon, turning continuously to coat evenly until the syrup crystallises. Should make about 24.

KURMA

Ingredients: half cup of firm margarine, one pound flour, four TBS condensed milk, one cup of oil for deep frying, two cups of granulated sugar and half cup of water.

Method: Rub margarine into flour until crumbly. Add milk and enough water to form a stiff dough. Roll out to approximately one quarter inch in thickness and cut into strips, cut the strips into three pieces. Deep fry until crisp and golden brown. Combine sugar and water and boil until thickened. Pour syrup over kurma, turning continuously to coat evenly and the syrup crystallises. Makes about two dozen.

LADOO

Ingredients: one pound ground dhal (split peas), one TBS baking powder, half cup evaporated milk, two cups of water, one cup of vegetable oil, two cups of granulated sugar, one can condensed milk, half TS ground ginger and half TS ground cloves.

Method: Mix dhal with baking powder, evaporated milk and one cup of water and let sit for two hours. Form in small balls and fry in vegetable oil. Using a mill or grinder, grind the balls coarsely. Add sugar and remaining one cup of water and bring to a boil until you can take a small spoonful of the syrup and drop it into a glass of water; if it crystallise before reaching the bottom of the glass then the syrup is ready. Pour in the condensed milk and spices; stir briskly until the mixture becomes stiff. Fold in the ground split peas and while mixture is still hot, form in small one inch balls. Allow to cool and set. Makes about 30.

BARFI

Ingredients: one pound of powered full cream milk, one cup of double cream, one and a half cup of granulated sugar, three quarter cup of water, one TS rose water, two pieces of fresh ginger, half cup of chopped cherries (optional), quarter cup of minced almonds and sprinkles.

Method: Mix powdered milk and cream (using your fingers) until very crumbly. Sift mixture through a sieve. Boil sugar, water, rose water and ginger for about ten minutes. Just before the sugar starts to get sticky remove the ginger. Stir in milk mixture and combine well. Press the mixture firmly into a greased dish using the back of the spoon. Decorate with cherries, almonds and sprinkles. Let cool and cut into two inch pieces. Makes about 30.

The Walk On The Beach

The Walk On The Beach

Early Friday morning
went for a jog on the beach
walked barefoot from the watch tower
to the other watch tower
and beyond.
What a thrill.

The waves crashed like crazy.
Well, the monsoon is definitely here
soaking wet to the knees

Saw a group of high school students from Johore,
walked past participants of TM Sports Carnival marathon,
and talked to a young man digging the sand for crabs
for fishing baits, he said.

Then made a stop at the Big Apple in town.
had a Tira Cino
tiramisu topping with a capucino filling,
just one for me
and a cup of capucino with no sugar added at all
such a sweet, creamy filling
that made me dreamy
such a mouthful donut
so soon
right after the walk on the beach.

[Al-Qashash: 83]. (msa/dkw/ansarportsaid).

Feeling Nostalgia

Now, Ramadhan 15th.
Slipped my mind completely.

Wedding anniversay
12th Ramadhan
decades ago.
at Makkah Al-Mukarammah.

Tied the knot.
only fresh fruits served.
Just Mauz, 'ainab, wa khoh.
No sweets at all
nor meal
but off course
coffee, a must have.

After,
there we stood
by the window
in the hallway
staring at the kaabah
the house of Allah
making do'a
for a blessed future
together
in marriage.

Rise Again - Day 14th Ramadhan 1434H

If you see in your dream
that I have two faces,
a face in the front
and another at the back,
maybe it's a sign for you
that I know things
that you know not.

When you can see
what is ahead of you
but by Allah's will,
I can see what's ahead
as well as what is coming
from behind.

In reality, I have only one face.
And I don't wear faces
to suit the situation or people
like some people seems to be.

Think again
before you create
another
and yet another
fitna.

Haven't you have enough fun and game?
Isn't it enough that you've served
your colleagues meat for a feast?
Back biting.
Carcass is better for you
if you knew.

What do you hope to gain?
Fame, money, power?
Have you made a deal with the devil
in exchange of worldly goods
and become the helper?

Ramadhan is here.
The month of blessings.
The time to turn over
new leaves.

Allah Hu Rabbi La Ilaha Anta, Khalaqtani Wa Ana 'Abduka ...

Their faces were contorted
and they looked at me
with such a disgust and hatred.
One after another.

I wondered what I've done to them.
Some of them had no dealings with me
what so ever.

The next time they came to apologise.
One after another.
Suddenly they became my best friends.

The eyes are the window to the soul.
Dumfounded at times,
the thoughts that crossed my mind,
I think something negative
must be circulated around about me
and someone started it.

May Allah SWT deal with them all
for I'm without resources
to deal with them all.

Allah is the best protector.

PiƱata for Jr's 8th birthday

We made this, Jr and I.

Started a week ahead and Alhamdulillah we managed to complete it in the nick of time.

The making of PiƱata came to a full stop when it was raining for 3 consecutive days and only resumed on the night before after Jr already went to bed.

One of Jr's teacher was asking about piƱata and I explained about the origin.

Yes, it's the latinos cultural heritage but many Americans have adopted it as a part of their very own popular culture.

I don't think it's appropriate to introduce this as a part of the language and cultural programme tomorrow and sconce or English tea doesn't have enough appeal to me either...

No food for English Booth tomorrow!

#GE13 #dream by Ummabdrahmaan

#GE13 #dream by Ummabdrahmaan

Red rocket is riding on the green wave
while waning twin moon is with luminosity decreasing.

Where are the scales?
By the beach -they are lining up
waiting for the green wave crashing.

When the wave
could be a giant one
gaining strength
turns into tsunami
launching the red rocket
further inland.

The wave turns into foams
returns to the sea.

The twin moon may set
a new day arrives.

The scales maybe down,
broken,
but like spring,
magically pops back up,
gets bigger
marching to battle
the white rocket with the red moon
emblazoned
that has been hastily
erected by the hillside
when they see
the blue scales marching in.

In time,
the rocket fall down
due to unstable footing.

The scales grow bigger,
replicate rapidly,
all over the land.

and you certainly
don't tell a dream
that you dream not.

Aedes Breeding Ground

It was built to be a waterfall cascading down the Bukit Puteri hillside.

Now it is the aedes mosquito breeding ground.

I visited Bukit Puteri on Saturday.

When stopping at the counter to pay for the ticket, I started to notice mosquito bites on my arm and swarms of mosquito hovering over my head.

Realising that I was frantically waving my arm to drive the mosquitoes away, the guard told me that it's lucky that I didn't come in the morning because there were a whole lot more of them during the morning.

It was about 2:45 pm and the sun was shining brightly.

He was quick to add that while the hilltop is under the the state of Terengganu Musem's jurisdiction but the waterfall is under MBKT.

mmm... can't MBKT be fined for breeding mosquitoes on their ground?

Can someone call MBKT and tell them to come and clean up the waterfall or at least send a couple of men to sprinkle some insecticide into those puddles of stagnant water...

Ops! that someone could be me!

light shower for a horse

I dreamed of unicorns.

A Sheikh in white robe came in a unicorn drawn buggy.

He greeted me told me that he was asked to fetch me.

We flew to a hillside near Al-Aqsa in a buggy drawn by four unicorns with wings.

Our journey was so quick and mystical!

Getting New Car Battery

I'd inadvertantly left the light on half a day last Wednesday as I was hurrying to pass the 'apam dewa' to Norzie and rushing to DKU to attend the Briefing on Final Examination by TNCAA.

The university guard helped to jumpstart the car.

But less than a week, the car won't start again.

Called the Jeff the mechanic to the house to jumpstart the car again.

But the car won't start again the next morning.

It's time for a new battery!

Switched the battery from waja to persona last night.

Hubby took personal to KL using the battery from waja.

Jeff came about noon today and jump start waja.

I drove it all the way to the battery from factory shop.

Someone told me he got a battery there cheap - RM180 when elsewhere it cost anywhere from RM260 - RM280.

It wasn't cheap for me. (*can someone tell me that I've paid a good price for it)

He said the battery for persona isn't widely available in the market now.

He has only one - imported directly from Germany.

He only charged me for $260 - if I returned the old battery.

He gave me a receipt and told me that the battery has one year warranty - if I show the proof of purchase - the receipt.

The receipt bear my name and my car registration number.

I wrote a note using a pen on the receipt just to remind my self about the warranty.

The warranty is not stated on the receipt.

Now, I have a running car, Alhamdulillah!

I wonder If the car would start after I left it for a few days.

I'll be joining hubby n son for LIMA2013 in Langkawi next week.

Flight tickets TGG-KUL-LGK are booked and paid for.

I plan to taking a day off next Sunday and enjoy it with Jr whatever school holidays left.

It's been three years in a row that Jr left for school holidays with his father and left me behind.

Three years since the degree programme starts its new academic semester in September and Diploma programme begins its academic session in Jun. I am one of the lucky staff member who get to teach both degree and diploma during both semesters - SEM 1 and SEM 2.- Lucky me! (Sarcasm intended!)

So, for this week, I have to finish marking all the papers by Thursday if I want to enjoy the holiday! - Classes on Monday and Wednesday - Meetings everyday - Final examination invigilation on Wednesday - OBE Workshop on Tuesday and Wednesday.

It's quiet at home. Jr has gone last night with his father.

My youngest brother and his family came home for the weekend and left.

My second brother and his family will be arriving tomorrow and leave on Tuesday - (can we go swimming? Pulau Kapas? maybe Sekayu? - but only tomorrow I'll be free)

My youngest brother will come back on Wednesday to fetch my parents to attend a wedding away since I can't possibly go.

My third brother just came home for a 2 weeks break.

and I will lock my self in my room or spend most of my time in the office to finish marking papers!

*I can't wait having to teach only degree programme so I can have some regularity - sem 1- mid sem break- sem1 - inter-semester semester break - sem 2 - mid sem break - sem 2 - semester break (so far, before diploma classes is ending, degree classes begins - about 4 weeks overlap - then final exam - coursework & marking papers + preparing final exam for degree classes - then it's time for degree final exam then Diploma class starts again > No down time - it's been on overdrive for the past 3 years - yet we're suppose to do research + publish at the same time - I only managed to do one group research n translated a few papers and got published 2 papers last year.

My son told me to find a job elsewhere where I can come home early! hehehheeee... he's been complaining that Momma has always come home late!

Good Night!

Sweet Dream Ye al!!

*start thinking of whom I can ask to drive me to the airport!

Spotted: a purple flower

I spotted this flower pots on display and as a decoration on by the outdoor wash basins at the Halal Restaurant Where we stopped for lunch by the Songkla Central mosques which is located just 5 kilometres from the city of Hatyai.

This lovely lavender flower is no longer available in my flower garden at home.

All died out last year.

When the rainy season came back only the cat whiskers hardy plants shoots out tender leaves, the rest were gone save some tardy mint leave in the hanging pot.

I wanted to ask if we could stop by the plant nursery just outside of Pattani to look for this flower but I really feel like it would be too imposing.

mmm... would it be too much if I even thought about going back just for a pot of this flower?

I miss it.

Circumcision

when I was a 7 years old, I requested Tok Mudim to allow me watching him circumcising the boys.

Those with him was telling him not to allow me watch the process.

He told them that he wanted to hear my reason first.

I told him that if I'm older, definitely he will not let me or I would be out there among men but would be among the ladies. Since I was only 7 years old, still a child not yet a young lady then I could be there among them. I just want to watch so that I can learn about the process. I also told him the if he would allow me to watch then he also should allow me to ask questions about why he was doing what he was doing.

That was when he came to meet the boys and find out how many would undergo circumcision the next morning.

He wanted to know the number and their ages so that he can plan.

The older boys would have to do their circumcision first.

The boys were told to soak themselves in the river as early as 6.30 am in the morning. The older you are, the longer you need to be in the water.

I was up early. Long before they came, I was there at the river bank waiting. By 6.45 am, the first boy showed up with his friends and jumped into the river.10 minutes later, two more boys came with their uncle. By 8:20 am there were more men and women came to take their bath in the river. Those boys were hiding under the jetty.

Tok Mudim came a little bit after 8:40 am and he was carrying a banana trunk on his shoulders. He the boys uncle to get another banana trunk and some pole sticks.

He laid down the banana trunk and dig the ground to fasten the pole. I was wondering what he was doing but when two boys came with white sheets and started to hang the white sheets around the poles sort of forming a curtain so that the people cannot see what's been done behind it, I understand.

Tok Mudim asked the boys who brought the white sheets to go check on the boys who were soaking in the river while he took out the knife from his toolbox and started to sharpen it.

He looked up when he saw me coming around behind the white curtains that was just erected and saw my questioning eyes. He explained that he should have sharpen it yesterday or before he came there as he didn't really want the boys who would undergo circumcision see the knifes. He'd many boys run away or change their mind from doing the circumcision after seeing the knife.

From the boys conversation yesterday, I sort of understood that the banana trunk would serve as a stool for Tok Mudim and the boys as well as a cutting board.

When Tok Mudim asked for the oldest boy to be circumcised to be brought in, I jumped up and took my place behind Tok Mudim to get ' the best view. '

There were voices questioning what I was doing there, the only girl while all others are men or boys.

"Hey, there's nothing to be shy about! Sooner or later after I've grown - up I'd get married and get to see the men's 'thing' which would be my husband! But, for now, I just want to learn how Tok Mudim do the circumcision. Maybe when I grow up, I'd become a doctor and do circumcision my self! " - That quiet em down and Tok Mudim spoke defending me and told them that he already told me yesterday that I could watch.

Among the tools Tok Mudim had in his box were knives of different sizes and shapes, rings, safety pins, gauze, cotton pads, scissors, bottles of iodine etc.

I asked about what's the rings for and the answer I get was "you don't have to know about it yet. Only men knows what the rings are for" and told me not to ask any more questions as the first boy to eb circumcised was already there.

The boy was already shivering from soaking in the water too long. Others told him that he should have stayed in the water longer as they said that it should have been at least 4 hours since he was in the water for less than 3 hours.

I stood there watching and that was then I realised that I don't have the stomach to become a doctor. I cringed when I saw Tok Mudim pull the foreskin and and pin the edge of the foreskin onto the banana trunk. The boy chosed not to take any medication and he had a piece of what it seemed to me like wood which he gritted in between his teeth. When I saw blood tickling out as Tok Mudim moved his knife and then scissors, it was time to make a move. My heart cringed.

Watching my son's circumcision, I had the same cringing feeling that I experienced then when I saw the doctor was cutting the foreskin and removed it with a scissors later... I couldn't watch! I had to look away!

Reflection on Using iPad for TL

Untitled
Originally uploaded by UmmAbdrahmaan @ busy!
I too have explored iPad2 as a tool in TL. My verdict: it's more of a hype than a real utility.

It's sleek, new and lighter. I consider buying it because of 8MP camera that comes with iPad2. (I'm an avid photographer!)

Story #1:
It's great for note taking purposes. I can just type away in note and email it to my email. But I loose all the notes when the app went hay wired. The notes appear duplicated, then tripled, then quadrupled. I delete new copies and leave the bottom one. Later, when I switch on the iPad, all my notes are gone!

Story #2:
I use once in the class (2010). After the demonstration on the basics of Photoshop in my Multimedia English class, I pass around iPad so the students can see for themselves the app describing the steps. As usual, the students ask for a copy. Without their own iPad, it's pretty hard to download a copy. Some students scribble the steps explained in the app in their notebook. Since my approach is leaning more towards experiential learning, I reminded them that it's the skills they should be after and not memorising the steps.

Story #3:
iPad is not as versatile as laptops. It's limited in function. For real work, get a regular laptop. That's what I'm telling others who ask for my opinion either to get regular laptop or iPad. The apps are great. My 6 year old son loves different educational apps for learning alphabets, phonics, reading and even the explores the universe with an app.

My iPad is now mostly in my son's possession. Now, he uses it to play the Battleship game and competes trying to out do with his uncle who is playing the same game. Before it was the dragon vale, Snoopy Street Fair etc till he gets tired of the game of till his uncle and cousins introduce a new game app. As for me, I'm using the iPad as a disciplining tool with my son - as a reward and punishment. When he misbehave, I'll take the iPad away from him. So far, as a disciplining tool, it works great. It's just happened that my son has been without iPad for a week now.

With hundreds of thousands of apps available, I can do wonders in creating learning materials. There was an email from Prof Amin about a workshop on using iPad in TL and I've signed up to attend it next month.

I'm sort of in a quandary now thinking how will I get it away from my son. I've spoken to my brother to borrow his new iPad for the worship. Hubby iPad probably would not work well for this workshop since his iPad is without video capability.

I think, I'll just withhold it from my son indefinitely.... He's already crying foul, "Momma doesn't love me anymore because she doesn't give me the iPad"!

Ziarah YohTam

YohTam spent months in the hospital since he came down with fever and went into coma for weeks at Hospital Sultan Ismail, Johor Baru then transferred to Hospital Sultanah Aminah, JB. once he was out of the coma.

Later, we asked to transfer him to Hospital Sultanah Afzan, Kuantan but were told that the experts for his condition are not available there thus YohTam was transfered to HSNZ, Kuala Terengganu.

I was told that he had viral infection in his brain and the base of his heart.

He was antibiotics and was showing improvement.

First they told him that he had to stay another month in the hospital then the next day he was told that he could go home.

I went to fetch him and took him home.

The plan was for Ba' to massage him for a week before going to to stay at Kak Mah's house at Felda Neram.

Anyway, he had an appointment for an x-ray a week later.

He had to fast from midnight till the x-ray is done.

The X-ray couldn't be done since there was a mediation he was supposed to take 4 hours before the x-ray wasn't prescribed to him when he was discharged.

Since coming back from the appointment, his condition deteriorate.

He couldn't swallow even the pill and was liquid diet.

Then, he couldn't get up on his own.

The day he was suppose to go to Neram, I called 911 for ambulance to take him back to the hospital.

That was more than two weeks ago.

All his brothers and sisters came to visit.

Now, everyone is gone.

Last night, I drove Ibu and Nyang to visit YohTam who has been in isolation ward since last week.

When I saw him, it was shocking! I can't help but shed tears.

His whole body is scaly and the skin is peeling off.

The lips was all black, gross and grainy.

His genitalia was even worst, raw and damp.

That was when I ran out on the pretext of filling the flask with hot water.

I cried all I want.

In less than 2 weeks, his skin turned black, scaly, flaky with blood pricking out from his upper and lower lips like tiny soap bubbles then turn dry and crusty. A flake fell off, fresh new blood coming out.

To be in the Isolation Ward is sort of a death sentence to the patients, another patient there told me. You don't have to pay the hospital bill anymore. Lucky if you get out alive.

YohTam complained that the nurses aren't as caring as the nurses in the ward. The food isn't cleared right away. Indeed the food from the evening was still there on his table when we got there at 9 pm. The used diaper filled up the trash can, it's smelly, the urine pitcher is almost full, the dressing of the wound that's supposed to be done twice a day wasn't done at all - YohTam had to do everything all by himself.

But, YohTam is a bit spoilt since he's been sickly since he was a little kid.

Last night he was asking the why question. Why is he always sick since he was a little boy not like any of his brother and sisters. He has 12 siblings.

One good thing was that he sounded positive this time unlike a few weeks ago when he was ready to die. Now, he talks about the future when he gets better.

I asked at the counter and the word Steven-Johnson Syndrome was mentioned. However, the skin specialist that visited earlier said that the lips and the body are on recovery but the genitalia area must be watched carefully.

Now, it's the rainy season. The weather is damp. It's a bit difficult to aerate the groin area unless he sit under the fan and open his leg wide open. Keeping the skin dry and clean is very vital besides antibiotic and antiseptic for quicker recovery.

I google on Steven Johnson Syndrome and Wikipedia and another website.

Here's one:

http://www.skinassn.org/what-is-stevens-johnson-syndrome.html

Please pray and make do'a for YohTam's recovery.

We'll bring him a small fan tonight. He said, "madam orang bersunat pulak".

BTW, Isolation Ward is off limit to children.

At the Immigration Department today.

Today, we held a briefing for the student group who're going to present at PSU undergraduate seminar next month.

Then, they filled in the form for group passport.

They were told to have 2 copies of passport size photos, copy IC, cash for processing fee and have actual IC with them.

The form cost RM1.

The maximum number that can be included in a group passport is 20 person.

The cost if RM200.

Then all of us boarded UniSZA bus to go to the Immigration Department Office.

The number was 1046. Our turn was 1070.

Some of us went to ground floor cafe and had lunch while waiting for our turn.

It was 2:30 pm when we went back to the campus.

It took 4 hours.

Lesson Learnt: Next time, have a letter by the Dean to the Immigration Office asking them to send one of their officer to process the group passport. Rather than all of the students go to the Immigration Office, let's have one immigration officer comes to the campus and get the finger printing process done! :)

Telah lama saya tidak menulis mengunakan Bahasa Ibunda saya. Bagaimanakah Penulisan saya dalam Bahasa Melayu?

Saya pernah mengajar kelas corot masa mengajar di sekolah dulu. (1997).

Kedatangan pelajar kelas saya setiap hari hampir 100%.

Ada pelajar yang sudah berminggu-minggu tak datang sekolah, mula datang sekolah semula bila saya mengajar kelas mereka.

Saya mengajar Bahasa Inggeris.
